Understanding Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that causes difficulty breathing while you sleep. It can disrupt your rest by causing your breathing to pause more than 30 times a night. Common symptoms include gasping for air, waking up with headaches, feeling fatigued or foggy during the day, and excessive snoring that may keep your partner awake.

There are two primary types of sleep apnea:

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea: This is the most common type, caused by the collapse of tissues in the back of the throat, which blocks the airway during sleep.
  • Central Sleep Apnea: This occurs when there is a disruption in the signals between your brain and muscles, leading to interrupted breathing.

The Benefits of Sleep Apnea Treatment

A good night’s sleep is crucial to our overall health and well-being, both physically and emotionally. Even if you don’t remember waking up throughout the night, sleep apnea is still disrupting your sleep cycle, which can have both short-term and long-term effects on your health, relationships, and quality of life. In addition to finally getting a restful sleep, what are some of the key benefits of sleep apnea treatment?

Improved Physical Health

Treating your sleep apnea can significantly lower your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, liver issues, and reduce the strain on your metabolic system. It can also decrease the additional risks that come with surgery or drug treatments, contributing to better overall physical health.

Feel Like Yourself Again

Do you often feel forgetful or struggle to find the right words? Sleep apnea can leave you feeling groggy upon waking and stuck in a fog throughout the day. After receiving treatment for sleep apnea, many patients report feeling more focused, sharper, and more like themselves again, enjoying greater mental clarity.

Strengthen Your Relationships

Treating your sleep apnea benefits both you and your partner. By reducing or eliminating snoring and nighttime restlessness, both of you will enjoy more uninterrupted sleep, leading to better moods upon waking. A fresh start each day can make parenting, work, and relationships more enjoyable, and your positive energy will have a ripple effect on those around you.

How Sleep Apnea is Treated

There are various treatment options available for sleep apnea, depending on the cause and severity of the condition. It is important to find a solution that works with your lifestyle and addresses your unique needs.

Lifestyle Changes

For mild cases of sleep apnea, treatment can often begin at home. Some simple lifestyle changes can significantly improve symptoms. Your dentist may recommend losing weight, avoiding alcohol and sleeping pills, adjusting your sleeping position, following proper sleep hygiene, and quitting smoking. These lifestyle modifications are safe and effective, and they may even complement other treatments.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)

CPAP is the most common and well-known treatment for sleep apnea. If you’re familiar with CPAP machines, you know that a mask is worn over the nose and/or mouth while sleeping. The mask is connected to a machine that provides a constant flow of air, helping to keep your airways open and allowing you to breathe normally throughout the night. There are various types of masks and machines, tailored to your specific needs and comfort.

Oral Appliances

Oral appliances are custom-made devices worn in the mouth while sleeping. These devices typically resemble a mouthguard and are designed to alleviate the symptoms of sleep apnea. Depending on the cause of your sleep apnea, these appliances can reduce snoring, reposition the jaw to clear the airway, or stabilize the tongue to prevent airway collapse.

Surgery and Medication

In some cases, sleep apnea may require surgical intervention or medication. Common surgical treatments include repairing a deviated septum, addressing a narrow throat or airway, or making adjustments to the jaw to relieve blockages. Medication may also be used to manage specific symptoms or underlying conditions contributing to sleep apnea.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common signs of sleep apnea include loud snoring, choking or gasping for air during sleep, waking up feeling unrefreshed, experiencing daytime fatigue, and having difficulty concentrating. If you or your partner notice these symptoms, it’s important to seek evaluation and treatment.

Sleep apnea can be caused by various factors, including airway blockages from relaxed throat muscles or excess tissue, issues with the brain’s ability to send signals to muscles that control breathing, or a combination of both. Certain lifestyle factors, such as obesity, alcohol consumption, and smoking, can increase the risk.

You may not be aware of the interruptions caused by sleep apnea during the night, but common signs include feeling groggy or fatigued during the day, frequent headaches upon waking, and difficulty staying awake. If you experience these symptoms, it may indicate that sleep apnea is affecting your sleep quality.

Several factors can increase the likelihood of developing sleep apnea, including obesity, smoking, alcohol use, age (especially over 40), family history, and gender (men are more likely to develop sleep apnea). Having a large neck circumference or issues with your nasal passages can also increase your risk.

Sleeping on your back can worsen sleep apnea symptoms by allowing the tongue and soft tissues in the throat to block the airway. Sleeping on your side or in a slightly elevated position can help reduce the frequency of airway blockages and improve sleep quality.

Yes, sleep apnea can affect people of all body types. While obesity is a major risk factor, individuals who are thin can still develop sleep apnea due to factors such as airway structure, age, or other underlying health conditions.

Yes, untreated sleep apnea can lead to a variety of serious health complications, including high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and depression. Getting diagnosed and treated early can help reduce these risks and improve overall health and quality of life.

I have been a patient with the Downtown Dental Clinic for many years and am very happy with the level of service and professionalism. They consistently assign me the same friendly hygienist, who is careful but at the same time very thorough in her cleaning. The dentists and hygienists keep me posted about my insurance will pay so there are no unpleasant surprises, and I have the impression they prefer to monitor potential problems and not recommend intervention until it is really necessary. I look forward to many more years of great service at the Downtown Dental Clinic.

Tamara is my hygienist, and she’s always calm, attentive, and makes sure I’m comfortable throughout my visit. The front office team is friendly, social, and very sweet, which makes every appointment a pleasant experience. I don’t recall my dentist’s name, but he did an excellent job with clear instructions and in removing my wisdom teeth. This is truly my number one choice for dentistry.
